Course description:

Join return-to-sport physical therapist, Dr. William Workman, and Sport Psychology Consultant Dr Paul Salitsky to gain an understanding of the psychology underlying physical recovery from injury for people eager to return to play. This course will help to educate and prepare Physical Therapists and Physical Therapy Assistants who are treating athletes of all age groups to better understand the mind-set and psychological barriers that might be impacting recovery.  This course will give Physical Therapy professionals tools to recognize the need for mental health intervention and to guide their patients toward successful recovery.

Speaker’s Bio

Paul Salitsky, Ph.D., is Emeritus faculty at the University of California, Davis where he specialized
in Sport, Exercise, and Performance Psychology, Sport Sociology, and Motor Learning for 25 years. He has a Level II coaching certificate from USA Volleyball, and coached Women's Volleyball at the International, Club, High School, and NCAA Div. I levels. He completed his doctoral training in Sport & Exercise Psychology at Temple University, and a Masters in Sport & Exercise Science at the University of Maryland - College Park. Dr. Salitsky has conducted over 500 clinics and workshops for an extensive range of sport organizations, teams, athletes, coaches, and officials of all levels on the application of Mental Skills for performance success. In his 10-years as a Mentor Trainer for the Positive Coaching Alliance, he presented over 175 workshops and clinics for leaders, coaches, teams, and athletes. Most recently he has extended his range of workshops to the high performance community providing dozens of presentations to artists, dancers, actors, musicians, firefighters, medical students, first responders, and other high performers.
He is a Certified Mental Performance Coach Emeritus (CMPC) for the Association of Applied Sport Psychology, and has been listed on the US Olympic Committee's Sport Psychology Performance Registry from 2000-2022. Salitsky has done extensive work with injured athletes and has provided numerous in-service development workshops for Certified Athletic Trainers and their students.

William “Bill” Workman PT, DPT, SCS, OCS, CSCS is a certified clinical specialist in both sports and orthopedic physical therapy with nearly 20 years of experience in sports medicine and orthopedics. He graduated from the University of Southern California with a Doctorate degree in 2005. Post-professional specialization has included extensive continuing education coursework, active involvement in professional conferences and research, as well as opportunities to inspire youths through sports medicine programs at local schools. Dr. Workman is a Board Certified Clinical Specialist of both Sports and Orthopedics; Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist; Certified Sportsmetrics provider (injury prevention and performance enhancement); APTA credentialed clinical instructor; and a Certified ImPact PT (concussion management). He has been an Emergency Medical Responder for the past 8 years, as well as the Laguna Creek High School Varsity Football sideline injury specialist for the past 6 years. He has been a guest lecturer on concussion management and a member of the Executive Planning Committee for Elk Grove School District Sports Careers Academy. Actively involved in research, he has published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. As an outpatient PT at Shriners Children’s Northern California, he specialized in return to sports for young youth athletes, and helped develop and run that program for 6 years. He presented at the Sports Medicine Rehabilitation Symposium for the Young Athlete at Shriners Hospital for Children in 2019. Currently, he is the owner of Return to Play Sports; and a clinician at UC Davis Edwards Athletic Center.

Learning Objectives

o   Understand the psychological process athletes experience during rehabilitation from injury

o   Recognize the need for professional psychological intervention based on screening tools and behavioral patterns.

o   Learn about evidence-based interventions that incorporate motivational strategy, coping strategies, goal setting, behavioral modification, and supportive and inclusive individualized care throughout the process of injury to return to play.

o   Provide community resources for mental health professional intervention
